Who is Juan Guaidó?
Juan Gerardo Guaidó Márquez is a Venezuelan industrial engineer and politician who served as President of the opposition-controlled National Assembly elected in 2015. Citing constitutional provisions on a vacant presidency, Guaidó assumed the role of Interim President of Venezuela in January 2019 — a claim recognized by the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Parliament, the Lima Group, and over 50 other governments at its peak.
International recognition of the Guaidó interim presidency eroded over 2020–2022, and the opposition-led National Assembly voted to dissolve the interim-government structure in December 2022. Guaidó left Venezuela for the United States in 2023 and has remained based there since.
